JKP, in collaboration with Paul Boehm Architektur created the proposal for the Revitalization of the famous Colonius TV tower. Located at the Cologne Green Belt, Colonius TV Tower together with the other TV towers in Germany has a very valuable central urban location. Nowadays these towers very often lost their function and, by staying close to the public, raise the question of what should be done with them. That's why we see this issue as an opportunity for sustainable forward-looking urban development.
Because the addition should not exert lateral forces on the existing structure, we decided to use a timber frame. First, we reinforced the original core tube, added a ring of timber columns, and connected the columns to the new core tube with ring beams to form the structural system. At two-thirds of the height, structural trusses were introduced, with diagonal cables suspended from the trusses to resist lateral forces. An outer ring of structural sunshades connected the towers, allowing some rooms to be removed to create outdoor gardens.
The tower will include office and apartment floors as well as provide new public facilities (gym, restaurants, etc.) Such a proposal, by hosting new primary living downtown, is an opportunity for a sustainable forward-looking urban realm.
